Here is the basic sum up before we went to Indiana:
Papaw was up for the weekend. He wasn't feeling well this particular morning, but decided to suck it up and deal 'cause how often do you get to spend the 4th of July with your grandchildren in Ohio?? Loved every minute.
One word can describe our 4th: RAIN. Poor Andrew was soaked to the bone. The candy was wet, our chairs were wet (and they were only out for the last 5 minutes of the parade), EVERYTHING was wet. But we were all still smiling!
Wet candy - yum....
We spent about 2 hours the day before making their shirts. I'd been looking forward to this project for two months and for some reason I waited until the day before. Go figure. But they loved helping and it turned out well. Makes me want to do some for every holiday.
We headed up to my SIL's house for the weekend just after the parade. We made it just after dinner - just in time for fireworks and mosquitoes. :) Good stuff. Some people were more excited about lighting them up than others.
Next day was a sleepy one. A mandatory nap was in order. So the men were given the assignment to figure out how to get rid of the dead branches in the backyard while the kids slept and Mimi and I went to the store for a few items. At the end of our grocery run we got a call from Michael saying that we needed lighter fluid and that one of the men was on the way to the hospital. WHAT?? Apparently they had all come to the conclusion (no one can remember who originally suggested it) that they could use gasoline to start the fire to burn the branches. They are all eagle scouts, but their training of 15+ years ago had escaped all of them. So Michael had poured it all over the first pile and was about to do it to the other pile. One of the other guys decided that instead of tossing a match into the pile, he would use a lighter. Yea - you know where this is headed. The explosion rocked the house, torched their garden, and caused some 3rd degree burns on this guy. He said for the next week that is wasn't that bad, but I've seen the pictures. Fortunately for him, he was sent home only after a few hours and only had to take a week off for healing. Blah! I'm SOOO glad that all the kids were upstairs napping. They had no idea what had happened until several hours later when it had all been sort of smoothed over.
The following week we had Mimi in Ohio with us. We had a great time doing a lot of simple things. My niece was down in Cincinnati at EFY for the week and my SIL came down at the end of the week to pick her up. The afternoon before we decided that we should all go swimming. Everyone was starting to get out of the pool to head for home when suddenly my SIL bolts from her chair and runs to the other end of the pool. She was halfway there before I even saw someone under the water. It was Andrew. She'd watched him go under calmly and he was trying to reach for the side to come back up. Two tries and he still wasn't getting it. So she bolted - and saved my son. But she also jumped into 3 feet of water at a full run and seriously bruised her heels. She couldn't walk afterward and couldn't stand by the time she was back at my house. We took her to the ER that night and laughed ourselves silly! She may not have been able to walk or stand, but her spirits were just fine. We found this in the room while we were waiting.
Maybe we were just exhausted and everything was funny, but we read the second line without realizing that the words were separate items and had a good laugh. I took a picture and may end up sending it in to Ellen's "What's wrong with this picture" segment.
We got home l-a-t-e that night, but she couldn't drive early the next morning to get her daughter, so I volunteered. It was the least I could do for the woman who saved my son.... The trip turned out to be a mini ward reunion. I had no idea that so many from my ward had attended EFY. It was a neat thing and I'll be more prone to send Bekah to an EFY closeby instead of all the way out to BYU because of it.
